R&B performer whose version of the song by Prince I Feel for You was hugely popular. The frontwoman for Rufus.'s I Feel for You is widely recognized as an instant hit. Rufus is the other group she's in. Khan has been Catholic. She was educated at The Hyde Park Saint Thomas the Apostle Church elementary school. Her grandmother was the first to introduce her to music when she was just a child. Khan as being a teenager in the year, became an avid lover of blues and rhythm music. In her eleventh year she started a group of girls called Crystalettes that included Taka. Khan was involved in several demonstrations in support of civil rights during the late 60s along with Connie, her father's second-wife who was a supporter of the cause. Khan joined in the Black Panther Party when she met Fred Hampton from Chicago. There is a belief that she was given the name Chaka during the time of the Panthers but she says that it was a Yoruba Baba who gave her that name at thirteen when she joined the party for the first time. She left in 1969 the Panthers and left high school having been to Calumet High School and Kenwood High School (now Kenwood Academy). She first began performing around Chicago in small bands, including her boyfriend Hassan Khan. Chaka and Hassan got married in 1970.
